Thanks to the Internet and top travel publications like this one, the Chicago River, dyed green, was the talk of the town on the recent St. Patrick’s Day. But it’s a tradition that’s been going on for more than six years. Approximately 18 kilograms of eco-friendly plant dyes are used to dye the water a few hours before the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. While there are many places to experience Paddy’s Day, especially the Emerald Isle itself, Chicago’s large Irish community dates back to the 1800s, where the Irish spirit is as strong as back home.

The parade is one of the largest in the United States, but is usually held on weekends.
